On that last one; how do you even get your caliper that screwed up where everything still works but is lined up so wrong. Smaller than required rotors?

Exactly. M ost DIYers will try to round up t he pa rts before disassembly, not expecting multiple rotor choices at the parts counter...

I can only imagine how that went down t he last time this Malibu needed brakes. Maybe they just crossed their fingers and went with whatever’s cheaper. O r maybe they ordered the parts online and didn’t want to deal with t he hassle of shipping them back and waiting for the new ones. Or maybe they ju st didn’t notice.

When I was in the Navy I helped my LPO out by doing brakes on her car.  It was a Dodge Magnum wagon she bought used, and was similar to the last post in that Dodge offered 3 rotor/caliper combinations based on if it had the 2.7 V6, 3.5 V6, or 5.7 V8.  The previous owner had mis-matched the calipers and rotors at some point and it ended up like the last post.

Oof. Is it not noticeable while driving? Subaru switched the shape of the brake pad and I have got the wrong ones before but it’s a very obvious, these don’t line up at all.

Well in this case, I went to Autozone to get pads and gave them the VIN and they gave me the brakes that were supposed to fit (it was a 3.5 V6), but they didn’t. So I went back to Autozone and dicked around with them, because they just wanted to do the VIN lookup, but I finally made then pull pads for the 2.7 and 5.7 cars. 3 different pad sets, and the 2.7 matched the old pads off the car. They fit around the rotors, but the caliper was offset enough that they work a groove like the last photo in the OP.

That’s a pain. I tend not to go to those sort of auto stores for most parts because  they have to put in the vin and still pull something wrong. I will continue to stick with rockauto for those sort of parts.

As I understand it, dealership parts cou nt ers can narrow down brake parts by VIN, but aftermarket auto parts  stores can only use it to confirm basic info like the model year and engine.

Agreed, but this was also like 11 or 12 years ago. Was Rockauto even around then? Also, she had already bought what she thought were the right parts, and they should have been if the previous owner hadn't fudged up the brakes so bad.

Maybe, I don't remember exactly how it went down, this was like 11 years ago.  But I do remember some back and forth with the guy at the parts counter and the ultimate outcome was we figured out the car had the wrong calipers.

Simply posting to comment that the 2.7 is one of the worst engines I have ever driven. So small for 6 cylinders! I cannot believe they even considered it for the rather heavy L platform.
